It was a fun little furmeet, short on programming but long on socializing. The hotel had a very nice, sizeable atrium in which people could hang out. There was a large percentage of fursuiters, which was fun to watch. The Dealers' Room was well-attended and I have no doubt that folks selling within did all right. The hotel staff was fantastic and really got into the convention.
There were a few firsts for me:
1) The Dorsai asked me to assist with security. Yay, I thought! What they did not tell me was that giza was also working security, specifically as a sergeant. That meant I was working for him!
2) Since I was on security, I spent about half the convention out of my lab coat and in a bright-orange SECURITY T-shirt. Between that and the lack of glasses, many people did not recognize me. On more than one occasion a person came up to me, Mr. Security Man, and asked if I knew where Uncle Kage was.
3) I was not asked to do any programming, although I was invited to assist with the charity auction, which I was more than happy to do. I thought to throw in a "private story hour," which usually nets a decent amount. The only bid? $50 from Recherei, who felt sorry for me because nobody else said a word. I guess I'm over the hill.
4) I had brought along a bathing suit with thoughts of going to the pool, but even though the theme of the convention is Horror, I thought that the sight of me without a shirt on would be too much. With little to do in the evenings, I found myself wandering the hotel halls. Here and there I found an open door with a party going on inside, so I knocked and then poked my nose inside. Each time I got the same hilarious reaction:
00:00 Shocked silence. OMG, it's Uncle Kage!
00:01 Oh crap, we're making too much noise. He's come to spit purple goo on us and send us to Hell!
00:03 Hey, wait. It's not his con and he doesn't have his SECURITY shirt on...
00:04 Quick, get him a drink!
(By the way, thank you to all of the folks who let an old man come in and socialize with them for a little while. Even if you didn't have any wine to share, it was fun for me to hang with you all.)
There are a few "needs improvement" items that I noted, but those are for a chat with Belic, not for LJ postings. Overall I had a pleasant time, and I think I'm likely to go back next year if I once again have time off.
